European Hauliers to start paying with the HGV Road User levy

European hauliers are to start paying the same toll charges UK truck drivers pay when using roads in Europe. reported the Department of Transport’s announcement that the ‘HGV Road User Levy’ introduces a charge that ensures British hauliers are better able to complete with their foreign counterparts’.

The HGV Road User Levy has long been called for within the UK haulage industry, and is touted to create a fairer system by ‘removing some of the inequality hauliers feel when paying to use many roads abroad’.

Patrick McLoughin, the Transport Secretary, also announced that ‘The government is also investing £3.3bn in major road schemes which will provide over 500 miles of additional lane capacity to the strategic road network and £10.7bn to add at least 400 miles of capacity on the busiest motorways’.
